Keeping Kids' Rooms Kid-Friendly and Home Friendly

Written by Gina Ciarrocchi, an intern at Susan Muschweck Interior Design, LLC

The biggest necessity when decorating a home is cohesion. Without that, a home becomes less of a functional, comfortable space and more of a stressor, which is something no one would want to come home to. Different spaces are the causes of these potential breakups in flow, be it an “off” paint color in a dining room or a sofa that just really doesn’t belong. In regards to bedrooms, more often than not, a child’s room can be the blame due to what is marketed for children. Large cartoon characters pasted on walls and scores of clashing, “kid appropriate” colors don’t allow for much consistency when the rest of the home is clean and serene with elegantly appointed decor. So, how can you still let a little kid’s personality shine through without compromising the overall theme of the home?

To effectively achieve the balance between fun and cohesive, keep the paint color soft and basic and wall decorations at a minimum rather than maximum. Pick up on the youthful personality of the space with differently styled lamps, pillows, seating, and other pieces that are playfully original, but still appropriate for the home.
