A Great Chandelier

A chandelier is one of the pieces that places the exclamation point on the project. It can pull the entire room together in a way that can be subtle, or the focal point.

I get really excited when I get to do a design that includes a chandelier for a dining room, kitchen, bathroom or bedroom. It's one of the pieces that places the exclamation point on the project. It can pull the entire room together in a way that can be subtle or the focal point.

Always follow this general rule of thumb when hanging a dining room chandelier. I typically allow 30 to 34 inches between the tabletop and the chandelier with an 8-foot ceiling. Increase this by 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling height. I usually end up with somewhere around 36 inches.

You can add a medallion to the ceiling then install the chandelier canopy onto the medallion for a more finished and formal look. I just installed a retro-drum-shade chandelier in a dining room in a home that is mid-century in design.  It replaced one that was decidedly wrong for this atomic ranch.

The appropriate chandelier—in scale and style—makes all the difference in the presentation and ambiance for the room.

There are many options for great chandeliers. Search for chandeliers online, at consignment stores, big box stores, or paint out an existing one. The options are endless and a great chandelier is the key to the comfort and design of the room.
