Minor League Football Team Comes to Moon

The Pittsburgh Stealth will play at Robert Morris University's Joe Walton Stadium.

Pittsburgh-area sports fans may have a new team to cheer for this summer at Joe Walton Stadium: The Pittsburgh Stealth.

In June, the team will join the ranks of the Pittsburgh Cobras, the Butler County Bears and the Beaver County Vipers as the area’s fourth minor-league football team. The Stealth, named for the 911th Air Lift Wing in Moon, will take on the West Virginia Lightning in their first match-up June 18.

And it’s no coincidence that the two similarly named teams will battle each other in the Stealth's inaugural game.

“Pretty ironic if you ask me,” said team President Matt Farago. “The opportunity presented itself, and it should be something pretty special, for me and for both teams.”

Farago, a Moon native and former media relations director for the Lightning, leads the team along with head coach Gabe Varrenti. Farago said he’s hoping to bring the excitement of football season to the summer months.

“It’s a pay-to-play league,” Farago said.  “These guys are out there for the love of the game.  That’s what’s great about this level of football.  It’s all about the game, which makes it all the more competitive and entertaining.”

Farago said RMU’s Joe Walton Stadium is the perfect backdrop for the Stealth. All games will be broadcast online at Champs Sports Network. Games will also include two dance squads, the Bombshells and the Bullets.

“We want to do this right and do it as a business,” Farago said.  “Minor league football isn’t used to seeing what we’re going to be doing.  We want to set the standard for football organizations both on and off the field.”

The team will play a charity basketball game against the minor league Pittsburgh Steelers Footballers basketball team at Moon Area High School in the coming months. Farago said he hope’s the exhibition game will introduce Moon to their newest sports franchise.

“While this is a Moon thing, we also want this to be a Pittsburgh thing,” Farago said. “We aren’t running this half-heartedly. We’re doing things right. The Pittsburgh Stealth are going to make a communal difference in the Moon area and beyond, while offering a high dose of competitive football along the way.”
