Former NHL Player Hired as RMU Sports Center Director

The newly hired executive director of the Island Sports Center starred in the hockey film 'Slap Shot.'

A former Detroit Red Wing player and star of the classic hockey film Slap Shot has been hired as the executive director of Island Sports Center. 

Dave Hanson will oversee operations at the Neville Island sports facility, which houses five of RMU's NCAA Division I athletic teams.  Hanson, a Peters Township resident, has worked at the center since 1998.

Hanson played professional hockey from 1974 to 1984 for the defunct Minnesota North Stars and the Red Wings. He portrayed one of the Hanson brothers in the 1977 Paul Newman comedy Slap Shot, which was filmed in and near Johnstown.

Prior to joining RMU's athletic department Hanson spent 14 years in sports management, according to the university.
