Support Staffers to Protest at Moon Area School Board Meeting

Education union members will protest cuts at school board meeting.

Members of the Moon Area Education Association will picket outside of tomorrow's meeting in light of recent staff furloughs and hours reductions.

In a statement from a union spokesman, union members said they will hold an informational picket at 6 p.m. tomorrow to protest the board's decision to furlough 52 support staff positions.

The district said the cutbacks will save it $425,000 in the upcoming school year. The district reopened 49 furloughed positions for re-hire, though many at reduced hours.

Local union president Blaine Hess, a district custodian, said in a statement that the cuts "aren't substantiated by the budget." He said more than 50 percent of the district's support staff will face furloughs, reductions or outsourcing under the measure.
