Moon School District, Union Await Arbitration Results

Representatives from the school district and its support staff union met for a binding arbitration hearing on Feb. 25.

A spokesman for the Moon Area School District's support staff union said it will be "weeks" before the parties learn the outcome of a recent arbitration hearing between the district and union.

The support staff union and school district held a binding arbitration hearing on Feb. 25 to resolve a months-long impasse between the parties.

Union spokesman Butch Santicola said he could not comment on the hearing itself. He said the union awaits the arbitrator's findings, which are expected to be made available in "several weeks."

The union has contested the district's use of the firm Global Management, an organization that specializes in providing cleaning, maintenance, and facility management employees on a contract basis.

School Board President Sandra McCurdy said she was unable to comment on the arbitration or contract with Global Management.

The school district entered into an agreement with Global Management Solutions in June 2011, as a cost-savings measure for the district to fill vacated custodial jobs within the district. The union has requested that the district end that agreement.
