Moon School Board Launches Superintendent Search; Supervisors Honor Milanovich

The Moon Area School Board voted Monday to appoint Bon Meade Principal Maureen Ungarean as acting superintendent effective July 1.

Ungarean will continue in the position for one year or until a superintendent is appointed. Superintendent Donna K. Milanovich will retire effective July 1 after 38 years in education.

The school board has also formally launched a search for the district's next superintendent.

With the application period currently open, the board hopes to involve others— district staff members, parents, students and other stakeholders—in the search through their participation in a survey.

District stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide input regarding the qualifications and experience they believe would be important in a new superintendent. Survey participants can only provide one response and answers will be completely anonymous.

Supervisors Recognize Milanovich

Moon Township Supervisors recently honored Milanovich, who started her career as superintendent in the Moon Area School District in July 2007. She first began her career teaching second grade at Bon Meade Elementary School in Moon in 1975.

In recognizing Milanovich, supervisors noted several of her accomplishments during her tenure, which included overseeing the construction of the new Moon Area High School in 2011, the renovation of the old high school to the Moon Area Middle School in 2012, and the construction of McCormick Elementary in 2007.

Milanovich also initiated an extended-day kindergarten program that evolved into a full-day kindergarten program for all children beginning in the 2012-13 school year and established the Moon Area Online Learning Academy for students who desire an alternative setting.
