RMU Receives $100,000 Hearst Grant

The grant will be used to fund the university's medical simulation programs.

Actors from Colonial Theater will now have a hand in educating the university's nursing students.

The university received a $100,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation for its medical simulation program. The funding will in part allow actors from the RMU's theater program to act as patients for the university's nursing students.

The actors will present symptoms to the student nurses, who will gain experience working with patients and diagnosing illnesses. The actors will also portray family members of patients.

This summer, the actors played adolescent patients for a pediatric assessment for the university's doctor of nursing practice program.

The university will use $75,000 of the grant to purchase a mannequin for its simulation laboratory. The mannequin, which is highly realistic and computer-controlled, will allow students to train before working with living patients.
