Remembering Phil: Seniors Honor Classmate's Memory

Students remember a classmate killed in a December car crash.

Senior Tyler Pannebaker said his friend Phil always wanted to be a teacher.

"So I hope that you will strive to achieve something in his honor," Pannebaker told his classmates from the lectern last night at the commencement ceremony.

Students remembered the life of fellow Moon Area senior Phillip Charles Walker last night. The 18-year-old Crescent Township resident was killed in a December Spring Run Road Extension car crash.

Walker's SUV struck a utility pole on the rural roadway just before 10 p.m. Dec. 6 in the single-vehicle crash.

Taped to the Class of 2011's mortar board hats were the letters "PCW" -- a simple way of honoring a friend who was unable to mark the milestone alongside his classmates.

A filled Moon Area High School gymnasium of nearly 2,000 people bowed their heads for a moment of silence in Walker's memory.

High School Principal Michael Hauser last night called Walker's death "devastating."

"It was a tragedy that no one wanted to happen," Hauser said.
