Kindergartners enrolled in the new full-day program will spend additional time on enrichment activities, said a district curriculum official.
Kim Prevost, assistant director for curriculum at the district, told school board members that under the new program, kindergartners each day will spend time working in small groups, focusing on activities geared toward their learning needs.
After months of debate, the Moon Area School Board for each of the district's five elementary buildings. An extended-day program was already in place for students identified as at-risk learners.
District teachers and adminstrators in favor of the full-day program, saying it would provide students with additional instruction time.
Classes resume on Sept. 5 for the district.
Full-day schedule for incoming kindergartners:
- Opening Routines: 40 minutes
- Math: 30 minutes
- Language Arts: 90 minutes
- Learning Centers: 25 minutes
- Lunch/Recess: An hour
- Enrichment/Intervention: An hour
- Special Class: 50 minutes
- Science/Social Studies: 15 minutes
- Closing Activities: 20 minutes
