The Montour School District will construct a new, consolidated elementary school on its Clever Road high school campus.
The district's school board approved a preliminary plan for the building Thursday in an 8-to-0 vote. The new elementary, which will join kindergarten through fourth-grade under one roof, is expected to open at the beginning of the 2015 school year.
Superintendent Donald Boyer said the district also plans to offer a new pre-kindergarten program at the new facility.
The district will submit plans today to the Pennsylvania Department of Education to be considered for reimbursement on the project.
The opening of the $55 million school will involve closing the district's Burkett and Forest Grove elementaries. Montour closed the former Ingram Elementary School earlier this year and will reopen the building as a community center on Oct. 2.
The district will hold a public hearing before adopting final design plans for the project. Boyer said four different renderings of the building have been completed.
Architectural Innovations LLC of Ross will work on the project's design, Boyer said.
The board also approved a $31,500 proposal from Gateway Engineers to perform surveying work at the site of the new school.
The district completed an extensive, $52 million renovation of its high school in 2011.
