Spring Run Road Extension to Soon Reopen

Contractors plan to complete a four-month bridge replacement project this week.

After shuttering four months ago, the Spring Run Road Extension bridge might reopen to motorists as early as tomorrow.

The roadway  Aug. 8 as contractors began work replacing the deteriorating bridge, which spans Boggs Run Creek.

"We are shooting to re-open the road by Wednesday, but if it rains, we won't be able to finish the touch-up work," said Doug Aiken, construction manager for The Allegheny County Department of Public Works.

"Therefore, I'll say it will open by Dec. 9 at the latest," he said.

The closure forced residents in the area to take a lengthy detour from Flaugherty Run Road through Brodhead Road. Officials with the county's public works department said the bridge was not slated to until May.

Aiken said the mild fall weather enabled contractors to complete the project ahead of scheduled.

"We will start paving the road [Dec. 2] and install the guardrail and other safety features early [this] week," Aiken said on Friday.

A county representative will then inspect the road as a final safety measure before the road re-opens.
