Spring Run Road Extension Closure Causes Motorist Headaches

A county official says work may conclude earlier than expected.

Debbie Amerio, a resident of the Bon Meade neighborhood, said it’s added up to extra dollars spent on her husband's commute to work.

An extensive  on Spring Run Road Extension has closed a portion of the roadway. The closing resulted in the relocation of her daughter's bus stop to Flaugherty Run Road and prompted Amerio's concern that first responders would be delayed in an emergency while they take the miles-long detour to her neighborhood.

"It's a safety issue," Amerio said. "And it's inconvenient, but couldn't [the roadwork] have waited until the spring?"

Officials from the The Allegheny County Department of Public Works, which maintains Spring Run Road Extension, said the bridge's deteriorating condition left them no choice but to close the road during construction. They said they were hopeful that the project would be completed sooner than expected.

The department closed the thoroughfare Aug. 8. New Stanton-based contractor C.H.& D. Enterprises is replacing the bridge that carries the roadway over Boggs Run Creek.

The road is closed between Boggs School Road to North Flaugherty Run Road. Residents living near the closed section of the roadway must take a lengthy detour, traveling from Flaugherty Run Road through Brodhead Road.

The project is slated to be completed in May, but Doug Aiken, construction manager for the county's public works department, said crews could possibly finish later this year, though he couldn't provide a date.

Aiken said the contractor “got a late start on the project.”

As temperatures cool, Aiken said, crews were prepared to postpone work in the winter.

“We can't do asphalt work when it's too cold," he said. "But the structure is halfway done. So if the weather holds out and we don’t get a cold snap, we could keep working."

He said the department set replacement of the bridge as a priority this year.

"It's an old bridge. Based on its condition, it was time to get it replaced," Aiken said. "It was its turn."
