PennDOT Unveils $1.5 Million Brodhead Road Project

Bridge built in the 1930s will be replaced, with construction scheduled to begin in spring 2012.

Motorists who frequent Brodhead Road will have to contend with single-lane, alternating traffic for much of 2012 while crews replace a deteriorating bridge.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Wednesday night discussed plans to install the bridge on Brodhead Road near the Flaugherty Run Road intersection. PennDOT officials said the bridge, which carries Brodhead Road over Flaugherty Run, is structurally deficient but poses no immediate threat to drivers.

Bill Beining, a consulting engineer working with PennDOT, said the bridge was built in the 1930s and has fallen into disrepair. The new structure will be 10 feet wider than the existing bridge to  accommodate a possible third traffic lane in the future, he said.

Work on the $1.5 million project will take place during regular business hours from May to November 2012. Beining said a temporary traffic light will be installed to control traffic, which will be reduced to a single lane for much of the construction period.

Large trucks will be forced to detour over Flaugherty Run Road until the bridge replacement is completed.

Approximately 7,000 vehicles pass over the bridge each day, according to PennDOT.
