Moon Police to Provide Traffic Control when Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge Closes

The Sewickley Bridge again will serve as the designated detour while the other bridge is being repaired.

When the Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge shuts down March 4 for lengthy repairs, Moon Township Police plan to maintain a presence on the Route 51 side of the Sewickley Bridge.

The Sewickley Bridge is again designated as the official detour during the closure. PennDOT has authorized to pay for the extra manpower on both ends of the bridge.

Moon Township Manager Jeanne Creese said coordinated efforts are planned between Moon and Sewickley police to assist with traffic control during the first five days of the bridge closure. Both departments will be in radio contact, she said.

The Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge is expected to remain closed until October as part of a two-year $16.6-million repair project. Crews are performing steel repairs under the bridge deck and substructure work, according to PennDOT.

The 10-foot span bridge reopened temporarily in November for the winter.

Creese said local police will be there if there is an occasion where signal timing needs to be adjusted, or to make sure detour signs are correct.
