Moon Park Lights Up: Supervisors Approve Baseball Field Lights

The township also awards naming rights to the baseball field to Verizon Wireless.

The  approved the purchased of $207,190 in lighting equipment for baseball field.

The new lights, purchased under a state contract through Musco Sports Lighting, will feature 80 foot-candles, shining bright enough to meet NCAA standards.

The purchase includes only lighting equipment—the board also authorized the release of bid specifications for the installation of the new system.

Supervisors also moved to award naming rights for the field to Verizon Wireless. Township Manager Jeanne Creese said the sponsorship will help offset lighting costs on the field.

Dana Kasler, director of Moon Parks and Recreation, said the lights will enable the field to host more games, potentially bringing in adult leagues wishing to play nighttime ball.

"We've even had some interest from local high schools who don't have a field," Kasler said.

The baseball field was completed two years ago as a part of a series of improvements to Moon Park. The lighting will also be used for the park's tennis courts, located adjacent to the field, Kasler said.

Kasler said demand on the field exceeds daylight hours.

"This will really be great," Kasler said. "It will mean a safer field."

The board approved the new lighting system in a 3-to-1 vote. Board chairman Marv Eicher cast the disenting vote. Supervisor Frank Sinatra was absent.

The township is seeking a fall and winter installation for the new system, Kasler said.

Dana Kasler is quoted "We've even had some interest from local high schools who don't have a field"........my question is, Is Moon one of those local high schools? The school obviously put money into a softball field for the high school and negleted the baseball field. I ask all of you taxpayers in Moon to go and look at those "new" fields at the high school! The fields are right next to each other, one is beautiful, one is a joke.....the boys can't even play on the field! There are rocks and other hazards...and no drainage to boot, a joke! I actually would like answers from the school as to why these two fields are so different, why nothing was put into the baseball field and why everything was put onto the girls softball field!

Hello, I do not believe he was referring to Moon. Rather, he was speaking of other area high schools.

Well, Moon's high school baseball team should have first dibs since they are not able to use the one at the high school beacuse of safety reasons for our athletes! Last year they had to use McCormick......again just want to point out that the school put all their money into the girls softball field and nothing into the baseball field. And, on a side note, I have a daughter that will use the softball field but my son's sport got ripped! Thanks to the Moon School Board!

Sue, the Moon Area School Board under the watchful leadership of certain school board members several years ago, shot down the idea of the Moon HS Baseball team using that facility when they told the township supervisors they wanted nothing to do with that field. It is really sad that because the board at that time were not concerned with the baseball program. The township offered the school district the use of the field in turn if they would help finance it. I'm not sure what the buy in cost was, but it wasn't nearly the $1 million the district paid for the poorly constructed current mess sitting on the main campus. Being involved with that very Moon HS Baseball program and the Moon Baseball Association for 39 years, I consider it a slap in the face to the BB program by the past board members who were only interested in their own agendas. Instead, they sank a few hundred thousand on a poorly conceived idea that building a field at the base of a big hill at McCormick will drain well. I could go on, but, it makes me sick every time I go home and look at what could've been another crowning achievement for the district. I have been told the HS field will be fixed, but if they did not do it by now, it won't be playable until the 2013-2014 school year. The administration and current board apparently did not get the memo that a field has to sit for a season before it is playable. Even if they sodded it now, no guarantee it would be playable this coming spring. Another year wasted.

One other note, I'm surprised that a past president of the Moon Baseball Association was the only supervisor to vote against the lights. Interesting!!!!

Thanks for the insight Joe! Unfortunately when adults work on their own agendas, its the kids that lose. Makes me sick!
