Moon Park Lights Up: Supervisors Approve Baseball Field Lights

The  approved the purchased of $207,190 in lighting equipment for baseball field. 

The new lights, purchased under a state contract through Musco Sports Lighting, will feature 80 foot-candles, shining bright enough to meet NCAA standards. 

The purchase includes only lighting equipment—the board also authorized the release of bid specifications for the installation of the new system.

Supervisors also moved to award naming rights for the field to Verizon Wireless. Township Manager Jeanne Creese said the sponsorship will help offset lighting costs on the field. 

Dana Kasler, director of Moon Parks and Recreation, said the lights will enable the field to host more games, potentially bringing in adult leagues wishing to play nighttime ball.  

"We've even had some interest from local high schools who don't have a field," Kasler said. 

The baseball field was completed two years ago as a part of a series of improvements to Moon Park. The lighting will also be used for the park's tennis courts, located adjacent to the field, Kasler said. 

Kasler said demand on the field exceeds daylight hours. 

"This will really be great," Kasler said. "It will mean a safer field." 

The board approved the new lighting system in a 3-to-1 vote. Board chairman Marv Eicher cast the disenting vote. Supervisor Frank Sinatra was absent.

The township is seeking a fall and winter installation for the new system, Kasler said.
