Moon Offers a Look Inside Its Public Works Department

Daylong open house, a part of National Public Works Week, gives the public the opportunity to learn about the department's responsibilities.

Moon Township's Public Works department offered an glimpse of its daily operations Wednesday as part of National Public Works Week.

The department hosted a daylong open house of its Stephenson Mill Road facilities, which serve at the center of its operations. The department is responsible for road maintenance and sign-welding as well as maintaining township properties and vehicles.

"Right now,  it's all about repairing catch basins, cutting grass on township properties. A couple weeks ago it was the curbside [tree branch] pickup," said Public Works employee John Stephens of the department's seasonal duties. "Every season it's something different."

Residents had the chance to stop by the garage where the 12-employee department stores its equipment, which includes everything from signs and orange safety cones to plows and an antique fire truck.

"We wanted to bring the public out to see what we do for the township," said Public Works administrator John Scott.
