Moon Completes Repairs to North Flaugherty Run Road Bridge

Moon Supervisors held a virtual ribbon cutting for the township-owned bridge that had been placed on PennDOT's critical list.

Moon Township Supervisors held a virtual ribbon cutting this week for the North Flaugherty Run Road Bridge over Boggs Run.

The Moon Township Public Works Department recently reconstructed the two-lane bridge, a project that was fully funded by the township and completed late last month.

Moon Engineer Malcolm Petroccia said Monday that PennDOT performed a routine annual inspection seven years ago found the now 50-year-old bridge conditionally in failure mode.

Two years ago, Petroccia said the bridge deteriorated to a critical failure mode in part because of concrete falling off the bottom and because the lack of guide rails didn't meet requirements.

Township Manager Jeanne Creese said this was the only municipal-owned bridge to appear on PennDOT's critical list. The bridge has now been removed from the list, she said.

Supervisors obtained a township bond to expedite the process rather than going through the PennDOT process, which officials said saved time and money.

Rather than hire an outside contractor, the public works department demolished the existing bridge, which serves eight township residences, and installed nine massive beams, a concrete deck and abutments.

"They did an excellent job," Petroccia said.

Supervisors Chairman Marv Eicher recognized the public works department and township engineer for completing the nstruction in record time.

"Sometimes these projects happen and nobody knows about them...and they'll drive over the bridge and not even know what happened," Eicher said.
