'Montour Junction' Nonprofit Goes Out of Business

The Pittsburgh-based Sports Legacy Foundation acquired much of the land that will make up the planned Montour Junction athletic complex.

The nonprofit agency that oversaw the development of the planned 78-acre Montour Junction athletic complex has gone out of business.

The Sports Legacy Foundation earlier this month submitted a $500,000 donation to the Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority.

The funding will go toward engineering and further development of the complex, the Post-Gazette reports.

The foundation, which will soon cease operations, obtained property for the proposed complex from the defunct Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad and awarded the property to the county in 2008.

The Sports Legacy Foundation also funded much of the clean-up of the former brownfield site, which is located on former rail yards straddling the communities of Coraopolis, Moon and Robinson.

When completed, the complex will include outdoor athletic and multi-purpose fields, according to current plans.

No construction or opening date has yet been announced. The project is estimated to cost between $10 and $15 million.
