County Exec Fitzgerald: Montour Junction Grant "Great News"

The state has awarded a six-figure grant to a long-planned athletic complex will border Moon, Robinson and Coraopolis.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald called a new six-figure grant awarded to the county's planned Montour Junction complex in Robinson, Coraopolis and Moon "great news for Allegheny County and the communities in the west corridor."

The Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources earlier this month awarded to the long-planned Montour Junction Athletic complex, which is slated to be built on a former brownfield site bordering Robinson, Moon and Coraopolis.

“The grant is one of the larger amounts awarded, and we are proud that such a significant investment is going to be made in the county.  The Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County has really taken the lead on this and has been committed to finding the funds to continue moving this project forward.”

The funding will be used toward the purchase and installation of a synthetic turf field for soccer, an extension of the Montour Trail and landscaping, Fitzgerald said.

The 78-parcel of land will serve as an athletic complex, including several grass and synthetic turf fields.

The sports center is designed to straddle the three communities, bordered by Route 51 and the Coraopolis Bridge.

The site of the complex was owned by the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad before it was acquired by the Pittsburgh-based Sports Legacy Foundation. The project could cost an estimated $10 to $15 million to complete, according to reports.

No opening or construction date for the park has been announced.
