Bill Legalizing Online Poker Introduced in Harrisburg

If legalized, online gambling could generate as much as $68 million in tax revenue the first year alone, according to a recent study.

The state senate on Tuesday introduced a bill that would legalize online poker. The bill, sponsored by lawmakers Sen. Bob Mensch and Sen. Edwin Erickson, would make it legal to participate in interactive poker with other Pennsylvania residents as well as those from states where online gambling is legal.

“Developments in technology and recent legal decisions have created an opportunity to legalize interactive poker as a means to further enhance and complement the benefits delivered by casino gaming, licensed facilities and the communities in which they operate,” the bill reads.

In May, the General Assembly's Legislative Budget and Finance Committee released a report that said internet gambling could produce significant tax revenue for the Keystone State. If legalized, online gambling could generate as much as $68 million in tax revenue the first year alone, the study said.

The report, prepared by Econsult Solutions Inc., of Philadelphia, states internet gambling could generate as much as $110 million annually without jeopardizing the success of the state’s casino industry, Philly.com reported.

Internet gambling is currently illegal but not punishable in Pennsylvania.

Well it's about time. People are playing poker with real money on a host of websites and all that money is filtered thru off-shore accounts and takes weeks to get your money back. Legalizing this activity (which is already taking place) will tighten up things and provide more protection for the players (Full Tilt anyone?) while generating huge amounts of tax revenue for the State.

I love to play poker but I would never play online! The game can easily be fixed so that you will never win. Additionally, the rosy projections of tax revenue are just pipe dreams. This bill should be defeated!

Paul Harvey warned about gambling being introduced by states to pay off bills in the 60's . At a time when gambling was ilegal. If you think you can ever win at a poker table against two other guys conspiring against you go ahead and play . Cards are the devils playthings but don't liosten to me . Look up Paul Harvey and many more of his coming predictions .

Look up Poker Joe while you're at it . He had more poker machines in the Lehigh valley than the Sands does . He made millions while you lose , but go ahead and gamble if thats your game and be part of the corruption problem that our state has brought on us . I'm just a thorn in everyones side that get messmerized by the bells and whistles. .
