“I have been humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and encouragement I have received from Democrats, Republicans and Independents throughout the district, and I look forward to a positive and spirited campaign,” Smith said in a released statement.

Smith announced last week that he would run as a write-in candidate. His nomination now goes to the Pennsylvania Democratic Party executive board for a final vote, which would place Smith as the Democrat on the ballot.

Allegheny Democrats Chair Nancy Patton Mills and Washington Democrats Chair George Vitteck said they couldn't be more excited to have Smith as the nominee.  Elected Democratic leaders from the district and across Pennsylvania also expresed strong support for Smith’s candidacy, including Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair Jim Burn, Senator and Democratic Leader Jay Costa and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

"The great leadership and good government that Matt has shown in the House will be an additional asset for Allegheny County in the Senate," Fitzgerald said. "With him as another partner advocating for us in Harrisburg, we are hopeful that we can see progress on issues like the assessment moratorium legislation and the anti-spiking pension bill."
