911th Supporters Plan Pittsburgh Rally

The group plans to gather supporters to protest efforts to close the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon.

Supporters of the Moon-based 911th Airlift Wing plan to protest its upcoming closure at a rally Tuesday in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood.

The Military Affairs Coalition of Western Pennsylvania will host a rally at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall on Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh. The group hopes to voice opposition to the Air Force's decision to the 911th, eliminating all of its personnel and aircraft, and downsize the neighboring 171st Refueling Wing.

Local and federal officials as well as veteran organization representatives will be on hand to speak at the event, according to a statement from the group.

The Air Force announced plans to close the 911th earlier this year as a part of a nationwide initiative to cut federal defense spending. Local and federal officials have the move, saying it could as many as 2,500 jobs in the Pittsburgh International Airport corridor.

The 911th is slated to close in 2013. More than 1,300 military and 280 civilian jobs will be cut as a part of the closure.
