Transformer Catches Fire on Wessex Hills Drive

The fire causes power outages in homes near Wessex Hills Drive.

Moon fire crews said a transformer blowout on Wessex Hills Drive knocked out power for homes in the neighborhood. 

Gary Barone, public safety officer with the said no one was injured when the transformer caught on fire after 9 p.m. Duquesne Light crews arrived on the street shortly before 10 p.m. to restore power to the neighborhood's homes. 

When emergency crews arrived the transformer was fully engulfed in flames, according to scanner reports.

Barone said it was unclear what caused the transformer to catch on fire. 

"It could have been people using their air conditioning," he said. "It blew up on its own."
