Moon Twp. Police File Charges in Several DUI Cases

A fight and hit-and-run accident among other items handled by police last week.

Moon Township police filed charges of driving under the influence against several people last week.

  • Brittany Lynn Sawyer, 30, of Monaca faces two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance after being stopped during the West Hills Task Force roving DUI patrol on April 13. While an officer was on patrol on University Boulevard near Brodhead Road, he saw a car driven by Sawyer traveling with no headlights, and then activate them. As he initiated a traffic stop, Sawyer made a turn and ended up on the road side of the road, according to a police report. An officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Sawyer. She failed field sobriety tests. Sawyer faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge Mary Murray at 9:30 a.m. on June 4.
  • David Andrew Beck, 33, of Moon Township faces two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance after he was stopped on Mooncrest Drive for driving erratically on April 12. A police officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Beck's breath and noted that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, according to a police report. He faces a preliminary hearing in district court at 9:30 a.m. on June 4.
  • Moon police charged Timothy R. Cunningham, 20, of Scott Township with three counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, and one count each of underage drinking and careless driving after a motor vehicle accident on the Business Loop of I-376 East, just past the Thorn Run Road intersection, on April 14. Police found a blue Ford 500 sedan wrecked into the center concrete jersey barrier and debris over 100 yards of roadway, according to a police report. Cunningham was covered with food, leading police to suspect he was eating while driving. Police detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Cunningham. A preliminary breath test registered positive for alcohol and Cunningham failed field sobriety tests. A blood alcohol content test was conducted at Sewickley Valley Hospital. He faces a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. on June 4 in district court.
  • John M. Hellgren, 46, of Moon Township faces a preliminary hearing in district court at 9:30 a.m. on June 4 on two counts of driving under the influence and a single count of careless driving filed by Moon Township police on April 12. According to a police report, an officer observed Hellgren driving erratically on Beaver Grade Road. After a traffic stop, the officer reported a moderate smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from Hellgren. He failed field sobriety tests and was taken to Sewickley Valley Hospital for a blood alcohol content test.

Eric D. Barbee, 30 of Moon Township faces charges of simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct after he was involved in a fight in the McDonald's parking lot.

After getting a call about the fight, police found Barbee walking up Carnot Road. According to a police report, he was winded, sweaty and agitated. Barbee told police he argued with a man about $40 Barbee had loaned to the man's girlfriend. However, the man denied that Barbee was owed any money.

Hit-and-run accident

Scott Alan Wilfong, 40, of Baden faces a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. on June 4 in district court on charges of accidents involved attended vehicles, careless driving, following too closely, operating a motor vehicle without required liability insurance filed by Moon Township police.

A resident reported that he was the victim of a hit-and-run accident on April 2 in the 1100 block of Stoops Ferry Road. The resident told police his car was struck by a blue Mustang—and that he got a photo of with his cell phone.

Police were able to trace to car to Wilfong.
