Moon Police Continue to Investigate Deadly Bicycle Crash

A Mass for Emily Jancart will be held Friday morning at St. Margaret Mary Church in Moon.

Moon Township police are continuing to investigate whether charges will be filed in a vehicle crash that killed a 17-year-old Moon bicyclist.

Moon police Capt. Greg Seamon said police are still looking into whether speed was a factor in Saturday's accident that resulted in the death of Emily Jancart.

"Once we have the investigation completed, we'll discuss it with the District Attorney's office," he said.

Seamon said the Allegheny County District Attorney's office will determine whether there were any violations of law and make a recommendation.

According to police, Jancart was riding her bicycle on the sidewalk from Sewickley into Moon about 5:30 p.m. when she came off the bridge and made a left turn to go southbound on Route 51 toward Coraopolis.

Seamon said Jancart turned into the same lane as a car driven by a 27-year-old Findlay man and was struck.

The driver, who has not been identified, immediately stopped. Seamon said police have interviewed him and he is cooperating. Moon police trained in accident reconstruction have also spoken to five witnesses who helped put the crash into perspective together with the physical evidence officers were able to find.

Valley Ambulance Service, stationed about 100 yards away, was on scene in less than a minute, even before police arrived, Seamon said.

Jancart was transported to Allegheny General Hospital and pronounced dead on Sunday, July 21.

The daughter of Rosemary and Deacon Robert A. Jancart, M.D., she was a recent graduate of Our Lady of Sacred Heart High School and was accepted at Carlow Univesity as a nursing major.

Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday and Thursday at Copeland's Funeral Home in Moon Township, 981 Brodhead Road.

A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Margaret Mary Church in Moon with Father Andrew Fischer officiating. Burial will follow at Sewickley Cemetery.

The family welcomes flowers or donations in her name to St. Margaret Mary Church, 1 Parish Place, Moon Township, PA 15108.
