Moon Man Charged in Burglary Flees to Avoid Arrest

Also DUIs, huffing, thefts and other items from the Moon Township police blotter.

Two men from Moon Township are charged in a burglary that took place at a Juniper Drive residence on Aug. 22, 2011.

Anthony James Terry, 21, and Alexander Rashad Turner, 23, both of Moon are charged with criminal trespass, burglary, criminal conspiracy and theft by unlawful taking. Additionally, Terry is charged with receiving stolen property.

A plasma TV, HDMI cable, laptop computer, smartphone, Tracphone, women's clothing and prescription medication were stolen from the home, according to a police report.

Physical evidence from the burglary was sent to the Northern Regional Police AFIS Crime Lab for analysis. A palm print at the scene was identified as Turner's and a warrant for his arrest was served on May 8. He was taken to Allegheny County Jail but was released after posting $5,000 bail on May 13.

According to a police report, Turner told police that Terry helped him commit the burglary. A warrant was issued for Terry's arrest.

While on patrol on Hemlock Drive in the Mooncrest section of the township, an officer who knew about the warrant spotted Terry and called out to him. He saw Terry, who, according to a police report is known to carry firearms, reach for the waist area of his pants.

The officer drew his weapon and ordered Terry to stop and show his hands, but he took off. Terry was taken into custody in a house on Cedar Drive.

Terry is also charged with flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct after police attempted to take him into custody on the burglary charges. He remains in Allegheny County Jail, unable to post bail.

Both men face preliminary hearings in district court at 9:30 a.m. May 28.

DUIs

  • Anthony Gallagher, 52, of Moon is charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol after he was involved in an altercation at 10:26 p.m. April 30 at the Sea Shell Bar, 932 Beaver Grade Rd. The bartender called police to request assistance in getting Gallagher home because he was highly intoxicated and was deemed unfit to drive, according to a police report. As police arrived, Gallagher ran out of the bar and attempted to drive away. Police located him at the Forest Green apartment complex, where he appeared to be passed out. He had a recent injury to his forehead and a strong smell from an alcoholic beverage was coming from inside the car. Police were able to wake him but he seemed confused and was not able to complete field sobriety tests. A preliminary breath test was positive for alcohol. The results of a blood alcohol content test showed his result as .285 percent. The legal limit is .08 percent. He faces a preliminary hearing in district court at 9:30 a.m. June 25.
  • Silas Charles Watkins, 28, of Coraopolis faces two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, along with charges of display registration plate-obscuring plate, and registration and certificate of title required, at a preliminary hearing in district court at 9:30 a.m. June 25. An officer on patrol at 2:03 a.m. May 5 observed an expired registration sticker and a tinted plastic license plate cover obscuring the plate on Watkins' car. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from Watkins. A preliminary breath test was positive for alcohol.

Huffing

  • Shanice Marie Branche, 20, of Pittsburgh is charged with two counts of sale or illegal use of certain solvents and noxious substance after an incident on May 6. Moon police and Valley Ambulance responded to a report of a female falling on the sidewalk. A medic told police that Branche threw something in a garbage can outside the Rite Aid, and that she had a can of computer cleaner. Branche, who fell in the parking lot. admitted to huffing and was transported to Sewickley Valley Hospital, according to a police report. She faces a preliminary hearing at 9:30 am. July 2 before District Judge Mary P. Murray.

Thefts

  • A resident reported that $10 in miscellaneous currency and a parking swipe were taken from her car while it was parked in her detached garage between 7 p.m. May 12 and 8 a.m. May 13.
  • A knee brace valued at $900 was stolen May 2 from the dressing room at the Airport Ice Arena on Hookstown Grade Road. The brace was taken between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. as the owner was referring hockey games.
  • A black Mercury Mariner was stolen from the parking lot of the Sheraton Inn on Thorn Run Road between April 29 and May 1. Stolen along with the car were a golf bag with a set of clubs, golf shoes, child seat, GPS unit, white hard hat and jackets valued at a total of $4,385.

Accident

  • Ace Chad Shonka, 34, of Moon is charged with accident involving damage to an attended vehicle or property, and registration and certificate of title after a hit-and-run accident April 25 in the Primanti Bros. parking lot. According to a police report, the driver of a Dodge Caliber with a Texas license plate, identified as Shonka, pulled into the same parking space as another vehicle and hit the rear bumper. After saying he was sorry, he left the scene. Police were investigating another accident with a similar car with Texas plates on April 28 at the Hangar Bar. The vehicle belonging to Shonka had corresponding damage from both accidents. Shonka faces a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. June 25 in district court.

Simple assault

  • Michael James Lerma, 42, of New Castle faces charges of simple assault and harassment filed by Moon police. On May 1 at 4:20 a.m., police responded to a new office park construction site at 1400 Cherrington Parkway for an assault report. Valley Ambulance was on the scene assisting a victim when police arrived. The victim got into an argument with Lerma and he told police Lerman punched him, knocking him unconscious. As the victim's son interceded, he was also attacked. The victim was taken to Sewickley Valley Hospital. All three men work for Hughes Corp. Lerma claimed the victim made racial slurs about his Mexican heritage. Lerma faces a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. June 25.
  • Sandra K. Delancey, 39, of Moon Township is charged with simple assault after a dispute with another woman on May 1 on Hirshinger Road. She faces a preliminary hearing in district court at 9:30 a.m. on June 25.
