Update: Pair Accused of Shooting Up Drugs with Infant, Toddler in Car

Moon Police said an ill 6-week-old infant and 2-year-old boy were present while their mother injected drugs.

An infant hooked to a sleep apnea monitor and his 2-year-old brother were found in the backseat of a vehicle while their mother injected drugs, according to reports. 

Police said they found Melissa Hedrick, 36, and Ellis Hedrick, 24, both of West Virginia, injecting themselves with needles at 2 p.m. Feb. 28 while sitting in a car parked in front of on Beaver Grade Road. It is unclear how the Hedricks' are related.

Melissa Hedrick's two young children, a 6-week-old infant boy and a toddler, sat in the backseat of the car, within easy reach of needles and other drug paraphernalia, according to police reports.

The infant, who Melissa Hedrick said was born prematurely, was hooked to a monitor for sleep apnea. 

Police were called after witnesses reported seeing a man and a woman "using drugs with children inside the vehicle." When officers arrived, they found Melissa Hedrick sitting in the front passenger seat with her pants around her ankles and track marks on her legs.

She told police that she had "picked up her prescriptions and was shooting them in her leg." Police said they found a number of used needles in her clothing. 

Burnt spoons with drug residue, marijuana and bloodied needles were found in the Hedricks' car. The 2-year-old boy was found sitting next to an empty prescription pill bottle, according to reports.

Officers said the drug paraphernalia in the vehicle "would have been easily accessible and dangerous to the children." 

Police Chief Leo McCarthy transported the children to the police station following the incident.

Melissa Hedrick was charged with endangering the welfare of children, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Ellis Hedrick was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

The couple was taken to the Allegheny County Jail and is scheduled to appear March 6 for a preliminary hearing in Coraopolis District Court. 

Update: Chief Leo McCarthy said that the children's grandparents picked them up at the station following their mother's arrest. Police issued new child safety seats for the children.
