Allegheny County Airport Authority Sponsors Firefighters Training

The ARFF Training Facility at Pittsburgh International Airport provides hands on practice with aircraft emergencies.

The Allegheny County Airport Authority is sponsoring a weeklong fall training session for basic and advanced Aircraft Rescue Firefighting through Friday, Sept. 27.

This session at the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Training Facility in Findlay is the training program for the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), an organization for airport professionals.

It attracts firefighters from across North America and is sponsored by the Northeast Chapter of the organization, according to the airport authority. The program involves rigorous training in the classroom and on the training ground, including practical hands-on training that is difficult to accommodate.

The ARFF Training Facility at Pittsburgh International Airport provides hands on practice with aircraft emergencies, and features a 135-foot diameter propane fueled burn area with a simulated aircraft fuselage in its center.

Besides being able to fight fuel spill fires, firefighters are also challenged with scenarios like engine fires, wheel brake fires, and interior evolutions such as cabin fires, lavatory fires, and galley fires. Firefighters can practice their search and rescue skills inside the fuselage.
