Longtime Moon Teacher, Coraopolis Record Staffer Remembered

Joseph Gardner

Joseph Gardner, 78, of Moon, died March 5. He was born Feb. 3 in Cuddy, PA and was married to his wife Shirley for 58 years.

Gardner was the father of Joetta Messina and a grandfather of two. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion. He formerly worked in construction.

Visitation was conducted earlier this week at Copeland Funeral Home in Moon Township.  A blessing service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at . In lieu of flowers, family members suggest that memorial contributions be made to Animal Friends in his memory.

Gizella Kalman Mato

Gizella Kalman Mato, 84, of Colorado and formerly of Moon Township, died March 4, 2012.

Mato was born on Aug. 23, 1927 in Coraopolis. She was preceded in death in 2004 by her husband of 48 years Stephan. Mato was the mother of Stephan Mato and a grandmother of two.

In 1991, Mato retired as the office manager of the Coraopolis Record and the Sewickley Herald. She was a longtime member of the Sharon Community Presbyterian Church. 

Visitation was conducted earlier this week at in Moon.  Burial was conducted at Coraopolis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or to Sharon Community Presbyterian Church.

Norman W. Davidson

Norman W. Davidson, 88, of Moon, died March 4 in his home.

Born April 14, 1923, he was a graduate of Coraopolis High School and a Marine veteran of World War II. He was also a retired machine shop estimator for Blaw Knox. He served on the Moon Township Municipal Authority for more than 20 years and was an avid golfer and outdoorsman.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bertha Steward Davidson, three children and eight grandchildren.

Visitation and services were conducted earlier this month through in Moon. Interment was conducted with Marine Corps. honors at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Mason C. Cady

Mason C. Cady, 74, of Moon, died March 3.

Born April 2, 1937, he served as a social studies teacher in the Moon Area School District from 1960 until his retirement in 2000.

Cady served as coach for numerous athletic teams in the district and had obtained a bachelor’s from Allegheny College in 1959. He later earned a master’s of education from the University of Pittsburgh.

Cady was an avid golfer and Pittsburgh sports fan as well as a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Shannon, three children and eight grandchildren.
