Moon Obituaries: Filmmaker Appeared in George Romero Classic

Samuel William Hinzman

Samuel William Hinzman, 75, of South Beaver Township and formerly Coraopolis and Moon, died Feb. 5 in his home surrounded by family. Born Oct. 24, 1936, he was married to Bonita “Bonnie” Mastandrea Hinzman and the father of Heidi Hinzman and the late William Hinzman.

He was a retired filmmaker, director and cinematographer. He may be best known as Zombie No. 1 or “Graveyard Zombie” from George Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. He also produced and directed children’s films and sports documentaries.

He was a 1955 graduate of Coraopolis High School and former member of the U.S. Navy Reserves. Services were held earlier this month at in Moon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Vitas Hospice in Pittsburgh.

Sharon Kay Modesitt Kortyna

Sharon Kay Modesitt Kortyna, 67, of Moon, died Feb. 1 at Good Samaritan Hospice House after a battle with cancer.  She was born in West Virginia on March 27, 1944, and was the beloved mother of Drew Kortyna and Kristin Dulaney. She was a grandmother of four.

Kortyna was a retired bank teller at . Services were held earlier this month at in Moon. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
