Moon Obituaries: Former Flower Shop Owner Remembered

Wilmer R. Wallace

Wilmer R. Wallace, 83, of Crescent, died Feb. 18 at the Masonic Village in Sewickley.

He was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Clinton and was a retired foreman for J&L Steel Company. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Clara Jane Mather Wallace, and children Billie Jane Grey, Judy Cook, Barbara Jean Petro, Georgiana Gilbert and Tammie Straffon; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were at Copeland Funeral Home in Moon Township. Interment was at Sylvania Hills.

Mary Jean Dixon

Mary Jean Dixon, 86, formerly of Moon Township, died Feb. 18. She was born on July 25, 1925, in Chicago and was the wife of the late Howard Gist Dixon, who was the retired vice president of the Dravo Corporation. 

She was a member of the St. Philips Episcopal Church in Moon and a member of the OES Sewickely chapter. She enjoyed knitting and making Christmas socks for her friends.

She is survived by daughter Donna Moore and David Gist and three grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Feb. 25 at St. Philip’s. Donations can be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Clarabell “Kitty” Griffey Shafer

Clarabell “Kitty” Griffey Shafer, 85, of Moon Township, died Feb. 17 in West Hills Health & Rehabilitation. She was born Dec. 1, 1926, in Chloe, PA, and was a member of the Coraopolis Church of the Nazarene and VFW Post 402 ladies’ auxiliary.

She was the co-owner of Shafer Flowers in Sewickley since 1949. She is survived by daughter Cindi Vasbinder and was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Burl Vasbinder, in 1979.

Services were at Copeland Funeral Home in Moon Township. Interment was at Sewickley Cemetery. Contributions can be made in her name to the Coraopolis Church of the Nazarene on Shafer Road in Moon.
