French Connection

The intersection of Beaver Grade Road and Sharon Road was a tiny village when it was named in 1819, comprised of a half dozen settlers.  Sharon village was named after the road.  58 years later, in 1877, the Post Office requested that Sharon village change its name to avoid confusion with the city of Sharon.   The name Carnot was selected as the new name.   Imagine! A tiny, rural western Pennsylvania village selecting the name of a famous French family as their new name!  Curiouser and curiousier!  Stay tuned to this blog for more.
By the way, the name persists. Carnot-Moon, Pa, is a census-designated place, having a population of 11,372 in 2010.  Strange pronounciations also persist;
the French family remains "car no'",   not "car not".
