Moon Environmental Advisory Council: Six Facts About Recycling

The Moon Township Environmental Advisory Council Council offers up information on recycling glass.

 

1. In 2009, three million tons of glass was recovered for recycling.

2. The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can power a computer for 30 minutes, a television for 200 minutes and a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.

3. By 2013, glass manufacturers will use 50 percent recycled materials in all glass bottles. This will save enough energy to power 45,000 households each year, and keep 181,550 tons of waste out of landfills each month. 

4. Bottles and jars made from glass are 100 percent recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss of quality.

5. For every six tons for recycled container glass used in the manufacturing process, one ton of carbon dioxide is avoided

6. About 39 percent of beer and soft drink bottles were recovered for recycling in 2009. So where 18 percent of wine and liquor bottler and 18 percent of food jars. 

Check the Moon Township municipal website for recycling events hosted by the EAC. The group will host a collections event for unwanted electronic items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Moon Municipal Building.
