Power Outages Sweep Moon

Duquesne Light reports that Moon was one of the communities hit hardest by storms Monday night.

Power outages Monday night led to traffic delays and an abbreviated Moon Area School Board meeting.

Duquesne Light reported that nearly 6,300 customers were without power due to two rounds of evening storms that swept the region. The company said Moon was among the communities hit hardest by the outages. 

Power briefly shut down in the , just as the district was slated to begin its monthly business meeting. The building's meeting room is not equipped with a backup generator, so the board opted to shorten the meeting and move it into the building's administrative office lobby.

The outage also shut off the traffic lights at the intersection of University Boulevard and Beaver Grade and Brodhead roads. and township Public Works Director Jim Henkemeyer used a generator to supply power for the busy intersection's traffic lights. 

Henkemeyer said all other traffic lights in the township remained operating after the storm. He said the outages stretched down the middle portion of University Boulevard.

Storefronts for University Boulevard businesses such as and remained dark through the night as a result of the outages. 

The in Moon had placed Allegheny County under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m.
