Moon Student Brings Together Local Celebrities for Basketball Game

Former college and NBA basketball players as well as local TV and radio personalities took part in the game, which benefited the Mario Lemieux Foundation.

It's been a hectic couple of months for Lauren Fozard.

In January, the senior decided to organize a charity basketball game. Then came the hard part: tracking down local celebrities, soliciting donations from area businesses and planning all the fine details of the event.

But as she stood on the sidelines of the Moon Area High School gymnasium Friday night, she said the effort was worthwhile.

"I put a lot of work into it," she said, as the second quarter of her Hoops for Hope game got underway. "But now I'm having a lot of fun."

Former NBA guard Myron Brown, KDKA-TV sports anchor Jory Rand and chief meteorologist Jeff Verszyla, and former University of Pittsburgh basketball players Brian Shorter, Darelle Porter and Gilbert Johnson took on the Moon varsity boys basketball team for the event, which raised money for the Mario Lemieux Foundation. The foundation, formed by the hockey great and Pittsburgh Penguins chairman and co-owner, supports cancer and neonatal research.
