Construction Postponed on Moon Military Commissary

Defense Commissary Agency says the project is awaiting congressional approval.

Construction on a  43,000-square-foot military commissary in Moon has been postponed, said an official from the U.S. Defense Commissary Agency.

Richard Brink, public affairs officer for the agency, said construction on the new commissary was originally slated to begin in July but has been delayed because Congress has not approved funding for the project.

He said the agency did not know when construction would  begin. The commissary is to be built at the intersection of University Boulevard and the Interstate 376 Business Loop.

During the of the Moon Township Board of Supervisors, the Allegheny County Economic Development agency  said it had hoped that construction on the commissary could begin as early as this summer. The Defense Department commissioned the county agency to build the facility, which will serve as a trade post and grocery store for military personnel throughout the region.

When completed, the facility will be the only commissary of its kind between Carlisle and Dayton, OH. It will replace the commissary in Oakdale.
