Columbia Gas Plans $16 Million in Infrastructure Upgrades

Kennedy, Neville Island and North Fayette townships are among the municipalities slated for improvements.

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, Inc. plans 13 pipeline improvement projects across the Greater Pittsburgh area in the second quarter of 2013.

The projects total more than $16 million and more than 15 miles of natural gas infrastructure upgrades in Allegheny, Beaver and Washington counties, according to a news release.

Of the seven projects in Allegheny County, North Fayette will receive 4,000 feet of pipe on Cliff Mine Road; Kennedy will receive 3,400 feet on Ehle Avenue; and Neville Island will receive 5,750 feet on Route 51.

Mark Kempic, president of Columbia Gas, said in a statement the company plans to invest more than $140 million in 2013 in replacing and upgrading infrastructure across the Pennsylvania service territory.

Many of the projects involve upgrading aging bare steel and cast iron pipe with a plastic natural gas delivery system. As an added safety measure, most service line upgrades will feature an excess flow valve, which automatically shuts off the natural gas service in the event of a large pressure differential, indicative of a leak or damage.
