An Evening of Pop Art At Cafe Trello

Creative energy filled the room at Cafe Trello, where imaginations were encouraged to roam free in order to fill a blank canvas.

Participants of a pop art workshop spent Thursday evening cutting out and layering images into art works, inspired by the likes of pop artists Andy Warhol and Peter Max.

Irene Hoelen-Trello, owner of Cafe Trello at 914 Beaver Grade Road, said she thought it would be fun to have the workshop, which was a first for the Moon business.

Instructor and Artist D. Zoe Shutka, who taught in Florida and teaches classes at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, said pop art generally involves the use of existing imagery from mass culture. The images are borrowed from other sources such as advertising, photography and comic strips.

"Andy (Warhol) has done everything from dollar bills to movie stars," Shutka told the students.

Attendees to the two hour class created one-of-a-kind pop art pieces that they were able to take home.

In addition to their pieces, participants indulged in refreshments of wine and, of course, Trello's chocolate-covered strawberries.

Hoellen-Trello said there are plans to offer a variety of future workshops, including knitting.

The cafe is hosting an evening of jazz with Tony Campbell from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, June 14.
