A Day of Fun and Learning Expected at Garden in the Parks Field Day

The annual Garden in the Parks Field Day sponsored by the Penn State Master Gardeners of Allegheny County is a day of education and fun for all ages.  The free event will beheld at the North and South Park Demonstration Gardens on August 18, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The North Park Demonstration Garden is located at the intersection of Wildwood Road and Babcock Boulevard.  The South Park garden is at the intersection of Corrigan Drive and McConkey Road.

The day features guided tours of the annual flower trials, pollinator gardens and herb gardens, children’s activities, and information on native pollinators, herbs, composting
and rain barrels.  Stations will be set up where visitors can sample different varieties of garlic, basil, tomatoes,
and vinegars and vote on their favorites.  Visitors will have a chance to talk with local beekeepers and learn about raising bees and harvesting honey.  Also, master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions, diagnose problems, and identify plants.

Those interested in canning, drying or freezing their garden’s bounty can speak with a Penn State
Master Food Preserver who will answer any questions about the process of preserving fresh fruits and vegetables.  Free testing of the pressure cooker dial gauges also will be offered.

Master gardenerswill be selling their own fresh produce, and an assortment of perennials, fresh cut flowers, and gardening items at the garden market.

Soil Tests kits will be available for $9
each.
