Sign Unveiled Honoring Longtime Moon Volunteer

Nelson Pond is a prime attraction at Moon Park.

When Edwin Nelson starting volunteering in Moon Township, the Beatles still were a touring band.

That was in 1966. And nearly half a century later, Nelson still is donating time on behalf of his hometown.

It started with his service on the local planning commission, and these days he serves on the Moon Township Parks Advisory Board.

To honor the man who shows no signs of slowing at age 85, township supervisors voted in the spring to name the Moon Park pond after Nelson. Under a bright sun Friday morning, the cloth came down to unveil the sign for Nelson Pond.

Along with his volunteer service, Nelson was an elected official, serving 30 years on the board of supervisors.

“All in all, folks, we calculated it, and we believe that Ed attended somewhere around 3,000 meetings and events like this on behalf of Moon Township,” said Donald Liskay, president of the township Parks Advisory Board, as he introduced Nelson prior to the unveiling. “And I dare to say it’s something we’re never going to see again in our lifetime here in Moon.”
