Update: Scouts Race at Annual Pinewood Derby

Cub Scout Pack 198 held its annual race at Riverdale Presbyterian Chrch.

Cub Scouts in Moon's Troop 198 Saturday took part in an annual scout tradition: The Pinewood Derby.

More than 30 members of the troop's Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelows gathered at to race their 4-ounce homemade kit cars down a 30-foot pinewood track.

"Some people say it'll go faster if you put the weight in the back, some say if you put the weight in the front," Cubmaster Ron Foster said. "There are all kinds of tips on the Internet."

Scouts and parents alike lined the track, assembled in the church's basement, to cheer on their cars.

"But really, I think it'll go faster if you can keep the wheels from wobbling," Foster said as one race glided down the track. "That works best."

Following this weekend's races, winners from each pack were selected to compete next month in a districtwide race at the Mall of Robinson. Scouts first receive their car kits in December.

The scouts also used the event to collect nonperishable items for local members of the military serving abroad. Foster said the annual event is a special one for the boys involved.

"It's definitely something they look forward to," said Foster. "It's one of the bigger events."
