Operation Military Kids Talks Mentors, Youth Organization

The group, which is new to the Pennsylvania region, holds a meeting to talk about upcoming plans.

It's been a busy month for Susan Smith, project coordinator of Operation Military Kids.

On April 4, Pennsylvania Sen. Robert D. Robbins (R-Greenville) announced a resolution to observe the Month of the Military Child during April.

In response, Operation Military Kids of Western Pennsylvania held several activities for children of military families, including a sleep-over at the Carnegie Science Center on the North Side.

OMK also held its monthly meeting April 8 at at the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon, where it plans to hold future meetings.

Attending that meeting were representatives from local military support organizations, including Pennsylvania Families Incorporated, Red Cross, Allegheny County Intervention, Penn State Extension (4-H), and the Allegheny Family Network, as well as independent therapists.

“I call it the military melting pot,” Smith said, explaining that OMK is open to children from families linked to all branches of service.

Smith used the meeting to talk about the launch of Speak Out for Military Kids, a program for teens who work together to help raise community awareness for military families and the issues they deal with during a deployment.

“I would think this would be a phenomenal support system for the kids,” said Dianna Brocious of the group PA Families Incorporated.

The group is currently looking for members of the community to work with teens.

"We need a mentor to work with the kids," Smith said.
