Neighbors Rally To Refurbish Playlot in Bon Meade

A committee hopes to raise $30,000, which will be matched by the township.

Ilene Sheppard said she got the idea after reading a Facebook comment.

"There was a message from a woman in my mom's group," Sheppard said. "It said that the Bon Meade playlot wasn't very nice."

So Sheppard, who has lived in the Bon Meade neighborhood for eight years, decided to write a letter to Moon Township officials. She wanted to know what could be done to improve the Meade Drive playground for area children.

"They said if I wanted to pursue something that a fundraising effort might be a good idea," said Sheppard, who has a young daughter. "So we got together a small committee and asked a few neighbors."

The committee's goal is to raise $30,000 for Bon Meade playground equipment and improvements. In March, the agreed to match up to $30,000 for the project. The township's Department of Parks and Recreation will assist with refurbishing the lot.

She said the committee hopes to add a play structure for 2- to 5-year-olds and an additional play structure for 5- to 12-year-olds. The committee also would like to add a couple of slides and a rubber surface for the playground.

"We're looking at making the area more an all-ages play area," Sheppard said. "Right now there are just a couple of swings and stuff and not really a complete playground."

Sheppard said fundraising for the project was still in its early phases. No final timeline has been put in place for finishing the play area.

Sheppard said a handful of neighbors is involved in the project. The group plans a fundraiser in the coming months, but for now it is talking to potential donors.

"We could definitely use a few more hands for fundraising," Sheppard said.
