National Weather Service Issues Flood Advisory for Ohio River

The flood advisory is in addition to a flood watch in effect through Tuesday evening. A high wind warning for the region has been cancelled.

Commuters who use the Monongahela River Parking Wharf in Downtown Pittsburgh will need to be thinking about alternative plans.

The National Weather Service in Moon Township has issued a flood advisory lasting from Tuesday evening through Thursday afternoon for the Ohio River at Pittsburgh.

Rising waters are expected to impact the river in Allegheny County starting this evening, eventually flooding the 10th Street Bypass and Wharf, the weather service said.

Blame it on the widespread heavy rains expected to blanket the region over the next 36 hours, with potential rainfall amounts ranging from 2.5 inches to 4.5 inches. Significant runoff is expected to cause the Monangahela River to rise as a result, according to the weather service.

The Ohio River at the Point is expected to rise 18 feet Tuesday evening and crest at 22.3 feet Wednesday afternoon. This will begin to flood the 10th Street Bypass. At 18 feet, the Monongahela River Parking Wharf also begins to flood and at 25 feet, the "bathtub' section of the Parkway Central begins to flood.

Drive safely.

The National Weather Service also has issued a flood watch for the following rivers:

  • The Monongahela River near Charleroi in Washington County, affecting Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.
  • The Monongahela River near Elizabeth, affecting Allegheny, Washington and Westmoreland counties.
  • The Youghiogheny River at Sutersville, affecting Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
