First-grader Emily Zomp takes top spot in annual writing competition.

first-grader Emily Zomp won first place Sunday in the WQED KIDS GO! writing contest for her self-penned poem Magically Mixing Animals.

The annual contest, which is sponsored by local PBS television stations, gives students in kindergarten through third grade the chance to write and illustrate their own short stories.

Emily received her prize from the storyteller Queen of Hearts, played by actress Kim Adley, at a ceremony in the children’s section of the Carnegie Library’s main branch in Oakland.
