Moon 'Beautiful Garden' Winner Shares Tips

Judy Pugh said the secret to a great garden starts in the soil.

Judy Pugh said it just might have been the mushroom compost.

"I got it in Sewickley and my garden just grew and grew," said Pugh, 67, winner of the contest last month.

The contest was judged by both the garden club at the and the department.

Pugh said she gets her green thumb from her mother and aunt, whom she watched cultivate meticulous gardens when Pugh was a child.

Pugh, who is a former member of the garden club, found out that she was the winner of the annual contest last week.

"I just called down to the office and they said I won," Pugh said.

Her lush township garden, which spans much of her backyard, includes both perennials and annuals, lilies, dahlias and summer bulbs.

"I do it whenever I get a chance," she said of working in her garden. "Whenever my body allows me. It's easier for me to keep a garden in my backyard than mow the lawn."

And when it comes to growing the perfect backyard garden, Pugh said it all comes down to the soil.

"I would say the most important thing is improving the soil," she said. "I've used manure and compost. And tilling the soil is extremely important."
