Mom's Talk

Moms should take time for themselves this weekend.

Mother's Day is this weekend, which seems to have come from nowhere.

It seems like the egg dye barely had time to dry and here we are, ready to receive all the fawning we deserve for the world’s most challenging yet rewarding position, Mom! (That’s not to discredit dad, but we get extra points for that whole pregnancy and delivery thing.)

During the time I have been writing the “Mom’s Talk” column, I have discussed some high-profile moms who seem to be under pressure to maintain the figures that allow them to be Hollywood starlets.

I have talked about mother Amy Chua, whose controversial parenting style might not work for us all but might have little bits and pieces that we can take and add to our parenting arsenals.

We’ve covered the public figures that influence our children and the Royal Wedding and whether or not we want our girls to dream of  Prince Charming sweeping them away.

We have even got to more sensitive subjects with “Mom’s Talk,”  raising a boy who wants to wear girl’s clothes, dealing with a non-custodial parent who might have drug or alcohol issues, and the mental health of moms to prevent tragedies such as the murder-suicide that  LaShanda Armstrong committed.

I have appreciated the comments and feedback that these columns have given, and hopefully there will be more dialogue to come. When the hustle and bustle of everyday living bogs us down, getting the children to school and activities, making dinner, putting them to bed, cleaning up, paying the bills, etc., it is easy for the rest of us to disconnect from the rest of the world. Before you know it two weeks have passed without a conversation with a friend or a little timeout for mom with a bubble bath and a good book.

My point is that we moms take on a lot.

We take the good: the school plays, the glowing report cards and even our daughter becoming the Princess of Wales (well done, Mama Middleton!).

We take the bad: the broken bones, middle-school detention for some bone-headed decision, the first love gone awry and other events that make every pile of laundry and sleepless night with a sick child worth it.

I remember attending church one Mother’s Day, and the pastor giving the sermon said his wife was allergic to cooking on Mother’s Day. Amen, sister!

This Mother's Day, I encourage you to take some time or schedule some time for yourself. You deserve it.
