Fireworks Are Fun, But They're Also Dangerous When Mishandled

State Police offer tips on having a safe -- and legal -- Fourth of July.

On the Fourth of July, many questions arise on the legality of fireworks in Pennsylvania, and what residents may buy and sell.

The Pennsylvania State Police give answers to these questions:

  • Items described as “novelty” items, including ground spinners, smoke bombs, sparklers and party poppers are legal in the state. These items are generally found in grocery stores or roadside stands and may be legally set off without a permit.
  • Items described as “explosives” include M-80s, cherry bombs, bottle and sky rockets, roman candles and firecrackers. These items are found in permanent businesses and are illegal in the state unless you have a permit.

Take Safety Precautions

  • Always read and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Use items outside in an open area.
  • Make sure a responsible adult should supervise all activities.
  • Light only one item at a time.
  • Place used items in a bucket of water prior to properly disposing of them.

Traffic Reminder

If you plan to watch the Fourth of July fireworks, state police are warning area motorists:

  • Do not park or stop on bridges, ramps or interstates. All violators will be cited, and any vehicles left unattended will be cited and immediately towed at the owners’ expense.
  •  Motorists should be aware that the Fort Pitt Tunnel and Parkway West inbound-only traffic will be detoured to the West End Circle or Route 51. The tunnel is closing at 9 p.m. Monday because of the Pittsburgh fireworks display. Additional troopers will be patrolling the area to ensure the continuous flow of traffic and the safety of all motorists.
  • Additional troopers will also be patrolling the interstates throughout the holiday weekend to ensure that motorists reach their destinations safely.
  • State police ask that you obey the speed limit, wear your seat belt and don’t drink and drive.
