The results of the primary election are in and there are a few local upsets in the race municipal, school board and county council seats on the Democratic and Republican tickets. Incumbent Matt Drozd lost the race for the Republican nomination to the District 1 County Council seat to challenger Thomas J. Baker, who captured 53 percent of the Republican vote to Drozd's 47 percent. Montour School Board President Ronald William Smith lost on both the Republican and Democratic tickets to challenger Darryl Young for the Region 1 seat, virtually assuring Young the seat in the fall general election. Bike to School Day is May 8, and Bike to Work Week is May 13-17.
The League of American Bicyclists recognizes May as National Bike Month, and with that, May 8 as National Bike to School Day and May 13-17 as National Bike to Work Week. According to YouCanBikeThere.com, which actually recognizes Bike to Work Day as May 9, the benefits of riding a bike to work or to school are many, including contributing to a cleaner environment. For examples, bicycling uses no gasoline and doesn't require batteries or motor oil. It also takes less energy to build a bike than it does a car. Also, "Bicycling significantly reduces transportation emissions while also reducing traffic congestion," the website states. Plus, there's the money savings and personal health benefits. If you're new, if you've moved, if you've changed names or parties, you must register.
Pennsylvania residents who wish to vote in the upcoming May 21 primary elections must be registered by Monday, April 22. Registered voters who have moved or changed their names or party affiliations must also notify their counties' elections divisions of their changes by April 22. An individual must be registered in a political party in order to vote in that party's primary. In order to qualify to vote in Pennsylvania, one must be a U.S. citizen at least one month prior to the primary, a resident of the state and his or her election district at least 30 days prior to the primary, and 18 years of age on or before the day of the primary. Current Moon school board president Sandra McCurdy has not filed for re-election, according to the Allegheny County Division of Elections.
Five candidates have filed to run for seats on the Moon Area School Board in the May 2013 primary. Candidates Jeff Bussard, James Donahue, Michael Hauser, Scott LaRue and Jerry Testa have filed as candidates in the primary, according to the Allegheny County Division of Elections. Each of the candidates has cross-filed has filed as both a Democrat and Republican, and will appear on both sides of the ballot. Hauser retired from his position as Moon Area High School principal in 2011, after 18 years with the district. Bussard and Testa both hold current seats on the school board. Corporate Planners of Robinson has organized a charter to transport about 50 people from Western Pennsylvania to the Inauguration festivities in Washington D.C.
Denise Norris will always remember the 2009 Presidential Inauguration as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “It was awesome,” said Norris of Corporate Planners, a full service agency based in Robinson Township. “It was just life changing really.” Norris will experience the historical moment all over again when she and others from Western Pennsylvania travel to Washington, D.C. to witness President Obama be sworn in Monday for his second term. An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 people are expected to attend the 57th Presidential Inauguration. The Patch totals are not updated to include absentee voting. Look at the results for each Commissioner ticket in Robinson (absentee votes in parentheses). Anyone else find it a bit weird that the Robinson Democratic Committee slate got a whopping 10% of their votes from absentee ballots? The proportion for the other 3 slates were each only around 3%.
